Mama Brain’s Maternity Wardrobe Essentials Part 2
Maternity Wardrobe Tips
The continuing story of this Mama Brain’s thoughts on maternity clothing essentials.
The Best Maternity Shirts
I found that many maternity tops were not very practical from a cleavage standpoint, particularly if you have to bend over a lot during your daily routine. Some basic scoop necked or boat necked tops in solid colors are fantastic. A plain, sleeveless maternity shirt can be layered under v-necked or cross-over shirts to prevent wardrobe malfunctions and provide some cozy warmth, and then keep working right into the warmer seasons when you feel like that bun in your oven is causing you to overheat.
I also found that my fashion taste didn’t suddenly change just because I was pregnant, and I would encourage you to continue to wear styles and colors that you are comfortable with. Don’t feel pressured to wear flowers, pastels, and frills just because they are available. Online shopping at stores like emommie.com can give you access to designer maternity wear at affordable prices.
Get Some Great Maternity Pants
It’s worth it to invest your time and money on some super comfortable and great looking maternity pants. Mine were a pair of jeans from Old Navy. They were cheap and (luckily) durable, and I wore them several days a week throughout my pregnancy and for several months afterwards. I tried other pants, but I always came back to this one pair of jeans. They were boot cut and sat below the belly, similar to this:
Well, those are all of the maternity wardrobe tips I can think of right now. I’ve been meaning to share them for a while, and I also have some thoughts on nursing wardrobes but that will have to be in another post. You can read about the first two things you should buy when you find out you are pregnant at my previous post.

What I Wish I Had Known About Maternity Clothing The First Time
I’ve been pregnant twice and I have to admit that in many ways I did it better the second time around (with one exception, I ate bacon and feta during my 2nd pregnancy, something I refused to do during my first, but that’s another story…).
First Pregnancy vs Second Pregnancy
During my first pregnancy I was so excited about shopping for maternity clothes that I wore it way before I actually had to. During my second pregnancy I wore my normal clothing for as long as possible.
During my first pregnancy I went out and spent a lot of money at maternity stores. I rationalized some of it by telling myself that I would be able to wear some items after my pregnancy, too, not realizing how anxious I would be to get back into my pre-pregnancy clothing.
During my 2nd pregnancy I wore hand-me-downs and visited consignment maternity stores because I knew that I wouldn’t be wearing the clothing for very long (or ever again). I also shopped online at stores like emommie.com because I already had a toddler and not a lot of shopping time!
Wardrobe Tips For Your First Pregnancy
Here are some tips to help any moms-to-be out there with their maternity clothes shopping.
First 2 Things To Buy When You Find Out You Are Pregnant
When you find out you are pregnant, go out and buy these 2 important pieces of clothing. They will help you stretch your budget (and your wardrobe) and carry you through several weeks. In fact, I found both of these items useful throughout my pregnancy (eventually I used the belly wrap for extra coverage between maternity tops and bottoms).
